Southwest Research Institute (SwRI®) is one of the oldest and largest, independent, applied research and development (R&D) organizations in the United States. Founded in 1947, SwRI provides contract research and development services to industrial and government clients in the United States and abroad. The Institute occupies more than 2 million square feet of office and laboratory space on a 1,200-acre site in San Antonio. The 3,000 staff members create and transfer technology in a variety of areas in engineering and physical sciences including drug formulation and delivery, medicinal chemistry, drug synthesis, tissue engineering, and pharmaceutical approaches for chemical and biological defense. SwRI holds more than 1,200 U.S. patents and staff members have earned 38 R&D 100 awards.

Texas Biomedical Research Institute

Texas Biomedical Research Institute, formerly the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, is one of the world’s leading independent biomedical research institutions. Located on a 200-acre campus in San Antonio, Texas, the Institute partners with hundreds of researchers and institutions around the world, pursuing advances in the fight against AIDS, hepatitis, malaria, parasitic infections and a host of other infectious diseases. In addition, researchers study the genetics of common complex diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer, psychiatric disorders, and problems of pregnancy.

Scientists who work on developing vaccines to treat diseases such as Ebola, Marburg and Lassa fever require the highest laboratory containment possible. One of only a handful of such labs can be found at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute. Texas Biomed built a biosafety Level 4 lab in 2000. This unique resource has allowed scientists in the Department of Virology and Immunology to become world leaders in the fight against emerging diseases and bio-terror agents.

Texas Biomed hosts the Southwest National Primate Research Center (SNPRC), one of eight federally designated primate facilities. The SNPRC has the largest baboon colony in the world for research (2000 animals) as well as chimpanzees, rhesus monkeys and other non-human primates. These animals have been indispensable in vaccine development for hepatitis B and other deadly illnesses.
